The Tape Digitization Project

Step 1: Inventory

Catalog all tapes. Label with dates and contents if known.

Step 2: Digitize

Use capture devices or professional services to convert to digital.

Step 3: Preserve

Store on multiple drives and cloud services. Share with family.

Video Archiving Tips

  • 1Act fast on tapes: Magnetic tapes degrade over time. Every year you wait increases risk of loss.
  • 2Keep original files: Don't only upload to YouTube/social media. Keep uncompressed originals.
  • 3Metadata matters: Add dates, locations, and people's names. Future you will thank present you.
  • 43-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies, 2 different media types, 1 offsite location.
